Bullfrogs are ambush predators and will eat almost any animal they can capture and swalllow, including worms, insects, crayfish, fishes, other frogs, snakes, small turtles, small mammals and even birds. They are the largest North American frog, weighing up to 1 pound and measuring up to 8 inches.
Like many species of frogs and toads, the American bullfrog protects itself by secreting poison from the parotid glands behind its ears. The poison does not affect humans who simply touch the American bullfrog, but eating bullfrog can kill a small to medium size dog or cat.
The call of a male bullfrog can be heard a mile away. The most intense calling happens between midnight and about three in the morning during breeding season.
