Mayapple or podophyllum peltatum is an herbaceous perennial and spring ephemeral. Surprisingly, it belongs to the same family (Berberidaceae) as Japanese barberry and so-called "heavenly bamboo."
This plant is easily identified by its huge umbrella shaped leaves. It usually grows in large groupings in shady areas of woodland.
